A founder member of the Welsh Association of Ladies Choirs, Cefn Hengoed
Ladies Choir was formed in 1947 by the then Headmaster of Derwendeg
Primary School, Mr Iestyn Evans and the village Ladies Club.
2012 will be the choirs 65th anniversary, making it one of the longest running
choirs in South Wales. The choir is proud of its past, and is looking forward to
an even brighter future.
Our music is of many styles, languages and genres, and is constantly being
updated. We are always very busy learning new repertoire and re-learning old
favourites. We are three part choir from a variety of backgrounds. Those who
read music, and those who don’t, in education, employed and retired. We are
inter-generational, with several mother/daughter pairs and a very wide age
range - currently 17 - 87 years old!
The choir has performed throughout Wales and the UK and toured Spain in
May 2009.
We perform regularly in Chapels, Churches, Schools and Community Halls
and have premiered new work. We enjoy inviting guest artists and
performances with other choirs. We are always delighted to welcome new
members.
To commemorate the Choirs anniversary, as well as our usual engagements,
the choir will be holding a Gala Concert at Lewis Girls’ School, on Saturday
29th September 2012. The choir will be performing a major piece of work, with
an orchestra and professional soloists, along with our favourite songs, old and
new.
